There are two ways to have students upload their exams and assignments to Canvas, please click the below option you prefer so that you may go directly to the section that best details what you prefer to do.
Please note: this type of post is eventually visible by all students who post. It is not recommended to use this for test submissions. This method does not allow for the in Canvas grading
Log in to your Canvas
Select the course that you would like to set up a discussion post submission in
In the Menu on the left hand side, click on the word “Discussions”
In the top right corner of your screen, you will see a blue button that says “+ Discussion” Click on this and it will bring you to a screen where you are able to select the options that you would like set up for the discussion post.
At the top of the page you will see a line that says “Topic” this is where you will list your title for the assignment so students know that they are uploading the correct file
Next you will see a big box that allows for text. This is where you will type any instructions or descriptions of the discussion post.
You can skip the next part that has a file upload button unless there is a file that YOU are uploading for the students to view. This is not the student upload section.
Under where it says “Options” this is where you select the features of the post. A threaded reply allows for students to reply to themselves and to their peers. Select the box near this option if you think that students will need to submit multiple documents for the assignment.
RECOMMENDED: check off the box near the option that says “Users must post before seeing replies.” This REQUIRES students to submit their own discussion post before they see the posts of their peers.
THIS METHOD IS NOT RECOMMENDED FOR EXAMINATIONS as it allows for resubmission, deleting, and editing of posts. There is no way to stop students from seeing each other’s posts.
Under the Section that says “Assign To”, you can enter the due date of the post and the time frame to allow students to submit a post
Once you have selected all of the options you want for the post, click the button at the bottom of the screen that says “Save & Publish”
Please Note: this type of upload is only visible to the Professor and TA. It does not allow for students to reply to each other.

In the next section, you will now have the options to select the submission type. There is a button that says “Online”, keep this as an online submission. Underneath this, check off the box near the option that says “File Upload”
