Canvas allows for you to edit documents and assignments directly on the assignment and within the Canvas platform. This allows for you to make corrections and give feedback and for students to directly download your feedback and corrections from the submitted assignment.
Log into Canvas
Navigate to the course that has the assignment you want to correct.
Go to the location of the assignment submission.
Click on the assignment
On the right hand menu of your screen, you will see a button that has a clock and says “Speed Grader”, click on this.
On the top right of your screen, you will be able to select the student’s name of the assignment you want to grade.
Once you have selected the student’s name, their submission will appear on your screen. Along the top you will see a grey menu bar. This is how you will edit and correct the submission.
We will be focusing on the section number 7 in the below image.
Using the toolbar:
To leave a comment on a general area, click on the button that looks like a hot air balloon missing its basket (The 6th icon from the right in section 7 of the above image)
Once you click on this icon, click on the section of the paper you want to comment on. This icon will now appear where you clicked in the document and the ability to type a comment will appear on the right hand side of your screen. Here you can type and save your comment.
To Leave a comment on a specific section and highlight that section, click the icon to the right of the hot air balloon, the pen with a line under it.
After clicking this icon, highlight the section of the assignment you want to comment on. This will again give you the ability to type your comment on the right hand side of your screen.
To add a text edit to the assignment, click on the icon that is a “T”. This will allow you to insert a text box and type a correction.
The “S” with the line through it allows you to strike through a student’s existing text telling them it is wrong.
The Paintbrush, second icon from the right, allows for you to draw on the assignment.
The last icon, the box, allows you to draw a box around an area of text and comment on what is in the box. Again, the comment bubble that allows you to type your comment will appear on the right.
Note: for these options, you are able to select the color of your choice. The color menu will show up below the grey menu bar on the left hand side
Be sure to save your comments / feedback. Your student will be able to view the corrections on their end by clicking the assignment and clicking “view feedback”
