Reflective means thinking critically about actions and consequences. When someone is reflective they are able to think and ponder on tasks to come up with new ideas for changing difficult situations into positive opportunities.
What does it mean to be a reflective person ?
If you are reflective you are able to think about your skills and identify actions for further improvement. You are able to think about things deeply and will pause to consider consequences before acting. Reflective people are often good listeners who are able to identify and analyse different points of views, and explain how they can be used to support creativity. In the workplace being reflective is a great skill to have and this is called reflective learning. Reflective learning isn't only great for your career but in all aspects of your life.
Document your accomplishments, For many people, an important element of reflective learning involves making a list of their past accomplishments. This helps you to understand your strengths.
Use constructive feedback, do not get downhearted about this as this can help you to learn where your development areas are and what you can do to support these areas.
Ask for help, Whenever you're struggling with something and find it hard to overcome certain challenges by yourself, consider asking someone for help this is not just in your home life but in all areas. You can also reflect on how other people helped you to come up with a solution.
Ask more questions, The advantage of this process is that you can practise it anywhere, even when there's no one to answer your questions. Whenever you have an important question, you can simply search for the answer on the Internet.
Why is this good for your Career?
When you are reflective it helps you to examine your development areas, how to build on these and to help you to understand how you can improve different areas. This will help you to identify where mistakes may be made or have been made and how to prevent this in the future, it also helps you to access systems or your process and see if there is a better way to do things.
Reflective learning also teaches you a lot about your personal development and the opportunity for you to see how far you have come on the goals you have set yourself or if there are goals that you still need to continue to work on.
