Teacher Talk: Classroom Management Strategies Beyond Connecting With Students

Kendal Norberg, 4th-grade teacher and member of the 2023 KS Teacher of the Year Team gives examples of strategies that work to create an effective classroom environment with procedures, organization, and on-task behavior. She explains why it is important to "Say what you mean; mean what you say" and follow through. She describes the steps necessary to teach a class of students to enter the room quietly and work productively.

About Kendal Norberg:

Kendal Norberg teaches fourth grade at Broadmoor Elementary School in Louisburg, Kansas; Unified School District 416.

She earned her bachelor’s degree in education from Kansas State University. She also earned a masters degree in special education from Baker University in 2019.

Norberg has taught in Louisburg for the past fourteen years in different capacities. She has been a substitute teacher for the district grades pre-kindergarten through high school, a STEM teacher for third through fifth grade, third grade teacher, as well as her current position in fourth grade. Previous to teaching in Louisburg she taught in Missouri as a fifth-grade teacher for three years.


In addition to teaching in the classroom Norberg has trained teachers and paraprofessionals at the East Central Kansas Special Education Cooperation in Crisis Prevention for the last five years as a certified Crisis Prevention Instructor. She works with others in her building by serving as a member of the Behavior Improvement Team. She represents her colleagues as a member of the negotiations team with the Kansas National Education Association.
