Dr. Teddy Roop, Associate Professor at Emporia State University,  defines the Science of Reading and explains how it is different from Balanced Literacy or whole language methods. She describes how the 5 pillars are critical to effectively teaching students HOW to read.

About Dr. Roop:

Dr. Teddy D. Roop teaches reading courses at both the graduate and undergraduate levels at Emporia State. She also supervises interns for the Wichita area Professional Development School (PDS) program. Roop graduated from ESU’s BEST Program with a BS in Elementary Education in 2007, interning in second grade and student teaching in fifth grade at Grandview Elementary in USD490. She spent the first seven years of her teaching career as a classroom teacher in first and second grades and as a mentor teacher for ESU’s PDS program. She received her MS-Reading Specialist endorsement from ESU in 2010. Dr. Roop earned her Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction from Kansas State University (KSU) in 2018. She is the program lead for the Instructional Specialist graduate program and the current president of the National Organization of Teacher Educators in Literacy (OTEL), a small group of the International Literacy Association (ILA). Her research interests include assessments and interventions for struggling readers, dyslexia, MTSS-tiered instruction, and the impact of policy on education.
