Terry Kaldhusdal is a nationally recognized 6th Grade Social Studies teacher at Kettle Moraine Middle School, known for inspiring students to "do" history through immersive, hands-on projects. A passionate advocate for active learning, Terry incorporates the National History Day (NHD) program into his lessons, guiding students as they delve into primary sources, conduct interviews, and create projects that bring history to life. His students' work has garnered accolades at state and national levels, with projects showcased at prestigious venues like the Smithsonian African American Museum.
Throughout his distinguished career, Terry has received numerous honors, including induction into the National Teacher Hall of Fame (2024) and being named National History Day Teacher of the Year (2023). His other awards include the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History Teacher of the Year for Wisconsin (2011), Lowell Milken Center for Unsung Heroes Fellow (2014), Wisconsin Environmental Educator of the Year (2014), Wisconsin State Teacher of the Year (2007), and the Kohl Fellowship Award (2006). Terry’s dedication to fostering historical inquiry and critical thinking has left a lasting impact on his students, encouraging them to explore and understand the complexities of history through authentic investigation.
The students featured in this episode are passionate young historians who took on the challenge of National History Day, where they transformed their curiosity into award-winning projects. Their research has led them to fascinating discoveries, from the roots of media polarization to the influence of a Bruce Springsteen concert on the fall of the Berlin Wall.
