Kindergarten students learn to identify basic two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes. They learn that 2D shapes are flat and 3D shapes are solid. The anchor charts below show the specific shapes kindergarteners are expected to know by the end of the year. At home students can practice drawing and building these shapes with playdough, marshmallows, gumdrops, pretzels, pipe cleaners and more. They can even go on shape hunts around your house, neighborhood or grocery store. You can also easily incorporate the mathematical language of shapes by talking about them in your every day life, such as how the can of soup you're opening for dinner is a cylinder, the soccer ball you're kicking is a sphere and the blanket you're covering up with is a rectangle.
