First grade students learn about the defining and non-defining attributes of two-dimensional shapes. They also learn to combine two-dimensional shapes or three-dimensional shapes in more than one way to form a new composite shape. The anchor chart below shows the specific shapes 1st grade students are expected to know by the end of the year. It also lists the defining attributes that students are expected to know at this age. At home your child can practice drawing and building these shapes with playdough, marshmallows, gumdrops, pretzels, pipe cleaners and more. S/he can even go on shape hunts around your house, neighborhood or grocery store. When practicing these shapes, please have your child name the defining attributes. Finally, included below are two videos that explain defining and non-defining attributes and composite shapes.
