By the end of 1st grade, students are expected to solve addition and subtraction story problems within 20. This means that the answer to an addition story will be no higher than 20 and the subtraction stories will begin with a number no higher than 20. Below are two charts that show the different types of addition and subtraction stories 1st grade students are expected to solve. At home, you can practice by giving your child problems that are similar to the examples on these charts. The hardest part about problem solving is comprehending what the problem is asking. Therefore, before your child begins to solve the problem have him/her retell what's happening in the beginning, middle and end of the story. It may help your child to act out the story with objects or by drawing simple pictures such as circles.
