In 3rd grade students students extend their place value understanding to now include the one-thousands, ten-thousands and hundreds-thousands places. They review the hundreds, tens and ones places from 2nd grade and learn about the place value of numbers up to 999,999. Using place value understanding, they compare and order numbers using symbols and are introduced to rounding for the first time. Lots of time is spent at school building and exploring numbers and their place values with various hands-on math tools. Below are anchor charts and videos that share some of the vocabulary and concepts your child is learning. The place value guides go into more detail and give sample questions. Finally, included is a link to virtual place value discs your child can use to build, visualize and explore numbers while working on sample questions from the guides.
