By the end of 3rd grade students are expected to solve multiplication and division story problems within 100. This means the answer to a multiplication story will be no higher than 100 and the division stories will begin with a number no higher than 100. Third grade students are also expected to solve two-step story problems that may include a combination of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Below are two charts showing the different types of stories 3rd grade students are expected to solve. At home, you can practice by giving your child problems that are similar to the examples on the chart. The hardest part about problem solving is comprehending what the problem is asking. Therefore, before your child begins to solve the problem it may help to have him/her retell what's happening in the beginning, middle and end of the story.
