By the end of 4th grade students are expected to solve multiplication and division story problems within 9,999. Fourth grade students are also expected to solve two-step story problems that may include a combination of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Below are several charts showing the different types of stories 4th grade students are expected to solve. At home, you can practice by giving your child problems that are similar to the examples on the chart. The hardest part about problem solving is comprehending what the problem is asking. Therefore, before your child begins to solve the problem it may help to have him/her retell what's happening in the beginning, middle and end of the story.
This chart shows the new one-step multiplication and division story problem types that are introduced in 4th grade.
