Rounding Decimals

In 5th grade, students learn to round decimals to any given place within the thousandths. Rather than simply memorize a procedure or set of rules for rounding, students are expected to develop deep conceptual understanding and be able to explain their answers. Number lines are a great tool to help build this decimal number sense. Below is a video that shows how to represent decimals on a number line. Once students understand that, they're ready to begin using number lines as a tool for rounding decimals.
