Subtracting Fractions with Like Denominators
Rewriting mixed numbers as improper fractions
One way 4th graders learn to solve a mixed number subtraction problem like 3 1/4 - 2 2/4 is to rewrite each mixed number as an improper fraction. So 3 1/4 - 2 2/4, could be rewritten as 13/4 - 10/4.
