These slides have various representations to help students learn the "5 and some more" combinations. Show your child one slide at a time and have him tell you the facts he sees, such as 5+3 and 3+5. Once your child knows these addition combinations, you can challenge him further by asking for the related subtraction facts. For example, when shown the image with 5 dots and 3 dots, a student might start with the total of 8 dots, cover up 5, see that 3 are left, and say, 8-5=3. Your child could also visualize the other part being taken away and say, 8-3=5.
