In first grade students learn to identify pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters and write the value using the cent symbol. They are not expected to count a collection of coins until 2nd grade. A great way to help your child at home is to dump out that piggy bank or jar full of coins and let your child play and explore. Have discussions about the characteristics of each coin. Talk about the names, values, what is on the front and back, if the sides are bumpy or smooth and compare the sizes. Below is an anchor chart you can print off for your child to match coins to when working on identification. Also, included below are coin poems, a money song and a memory game that can be used when playing and learning.
