The safety of you and your family is our #1 priority!
We want to ensure we have a plan in place to support you so you can prepare for a storm.
Make sure your emergency contact Information is up to date with FLVS in Workday and with your IL/Schoolhouse.
Log into Workday. Under PERSONAL INFORMATION, make sure your contact information, emergency contacts, and address is up to date.
2. Make sure you have an emergency coverage buddy in place and your contact information is updated on our schoolhouse emergency contact document:
3. Before the storm, communicate with your families that we are monitoring storm conditions and that their safety is our utmost concern. During storm preparations, we should not be making calls to students in the potentially affected area, requesting them to submit work. They are also worrying about their families' safety.
If you are evacuating, need to step away for storm prep, or lose power, PLEASE reach out to your TOA and IL to let us know so we can take care of your students, and you can focus on your family. We want you to have peace of mind and know that you have a FULL support system in place.
Right after a hurricane or storm, please update your TOA and IL on the safety of you and your family.
Before returning to work, FLVS will need to confirm that you have power, internet, and water at home.
If you have evacuated, you are welcome to work remotely from your current location during this time.
Wellness Check with Student and Family
Following a hurricane, check in with all your students and families for a wellness check. Let them know you are OK and that you’re here for them. Avoid discussing any lack of work or when they will be ready to work, and don’t mention withdrawal unless the family or student brings it up. Keep a list of who has access, what access they have, and who you have not yet reached. Please refrain from calling them every day.
Remember, CALLS are always best! Here is an example of a wellness check text:
Hi ___ and Family! I’m just checking in to see if you and your family are okay after the hurricane. Please reach out if you need any support. If evacuation or hurricane damage is preventing you from working, let me know so I can best meet your needs. You are important to me, and I hope to hear back about how you’re doing soon! ~Ms. Teacher😊
Please use PENDING EXAM (PE) for any special situations and reach out for additional support. Include any notes in the VSA comment box to document any students affected by the storm.

Guiding Questions to use when reaching out to support your students:
How are you and your family doing?
Starting with a personal question shows that you care about their well-being beyond just their academic performance. It's important to ensure that their basic needs are being met and that they have a safe and stable environment to continue their learning.
Did the hurricane impact your home or community?
This question allows students to share their experiences and any challenges they might be facing as a result of the hurricane. It's a way to encourage them to open up about their feelings and concerns, and it shows that you're interested in understanding their individual situations.
What kind of support do you need to continue your studies?
This question helps you gauge their needs and how you can best assist them in resuming their education. They might require resources, extra time to catch up, emotional support, or any other type of help. This question demonstrates your willingness to accommodate their circumstances and provide appropriate assistance.
Remember, being a caring teacher means addressing not only academic needs but also showing empathy and understanding for students' personal experiences during difficult times. This mirrors the actions we take in a brick-and-mortar classroom. We are here for our students, ensuring they and their families are safe and cared for. After the recovery period, we will work with students individually to guide them on the best path to support they need for their FLVS classes. (You all excel at building relationships with your families!)
Use our VSA filters to identify students that are effected.
You can use VSA to help identify these students in your classroom by using the “school district” filter or the “school district” column:
