Discussion Based Assessments, better known as DBAs, are two way conversations between the teacher and the student. DBAs are a great opportunity for teachers to get to know their students, ensure academic integrity, and to make certain students understand the material they have covered in the lessons.

DBAs must be completed verbally. You may complete DBAs verbally via phone or in your virtual Zoom office. Students must earn a grade of 60%+ on DBAs to pass the class. However, students are allowed to attempt DBAs multiple times, if needed. Per FLVS policy, students may only complete one DBA per day. So please encourage students not to skip DBAs. If you see a student is almost ready for a DBA, check in with them and the parent to see if they want to get a time set up/scheduled for the DBA.

The DBA rubric is a guideline for grading DBAs. Not all students will receive full credit on DBAs and that is OK! The goal is to ensure students have learned the material and met the course objectives. If a student struggles in an area of the DBA, you may need to take off points. But please use this as a teachable opportunity to review where the student is struggling, and then feedforward to upcoming assignments.

When should I take off points during a DBA?
If the student is not prepared at the time of their scheduled DBA, then you may need to take off points.
If the student does not complete the DBA in a timely manner or skips a DBA, then you may need to take off points.
If the student struggles answering a question or talking about a topic, then you may need to take off points.
If the student needs to look back at their notes or in the lesson, then you may need to take off points.
**Remember, the DBA score should reflect the student's grade in the class. Every student should not be receiving a 100% on the DBAs.

Logging DBAs in Educator & VSA
When you complete a DBA, have Educator and VSA open, with the student’s profile up on both.
Once you complete the DBA, include the feedback in Educator, but leave the “grade” blank, and hit submit (as seen to the right).
The student MUST submit the DBA in order to put in a grade for for this assignment.
Then, copy and paste your feedback into VSA, to document the discussion (as seen below).
