Upper School Open Studio

Mrs. Christy has set up a schedule for times that high school students may come by and participate in art during their free time. This is her email:
This is not mandatory, but is an option if you are interested in having a space and time to create art and you don't have anything pressing for other classes.
There is an art competition in April. I would need to know by the end of March if you are interested. You can submit works in categories (drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, digital media). This will be an addition to your transcript as it is a regional/state competition.
I will try to let you know days in advance if there is a cancellation or change in the schedule (i.e., I have to be out)
*There will be no studio time on TUES., the 13th, as I will be away for the morning, and another series of dates is possible towards the end of February, early March for the birth of a grandbaby.
The calendar and time are attached. These are the weeks that I do not have 8th graders, so my room is free.

Upper School Cityscape
By: Callie Dockery
This week, Mrs. Christy's Upper School Art Class has been working on creating their very own cityscape. Each student is drawing their own version of what a city looks like to them, with a few guidelines in place. They must include a way to receive water, an electricity source, a vehicle (or some type of transportation), sidewalks, and buildings. A few of us thought it would be funny to add Mr. Bounds riding a bicycle in our city.
Since Christmas break is so close, the whole school is a bit chaotic right now. With the focus being on the Christmas Music Festival, the art schedule is a little wonky. However, first grade did manage to complete their baking soda and vinegar ornaments! Mrs. Christy said it didn't go exactly as planned, but I think they look wonderful. Mrs. Christy is also already working on props for the middle school play competition. A lot more exciting things will be coming up in art, so stay alert!
Lila's cityscape looks absolutely amazing! 😄

This week, Mrs. Christy’s Kindergarten Art Class made paper gingerbread men, and I had the amazing opportunity to watch them create! Before I came to their class, they had already done a bit on the project. Mrs. Christy had given out sheets of white paper with a black outline of a gingerbread man and little cut-up pieces of brown paper. Most of the gingerbread men were halfway covered in brown paper chunks by the time class started. They started this class period by continuing to fill up their gingerbread men with the brown paper.
Mrs. Christy had also cut up other bright colors of paper into little zigzag lines to decorate the gingerbread men. Once the children glued the zigzag line of colorful paper onto their gingerbread men, they cut them out. Mrs. Christy used an amazing analogy to teach the children how to use scissors properly. “Scissors are like alligators, and the paper is like the food for the alligators. Move the food, not the alligator.” When the kids were done, they proudly held up their gingerbread men to show me their creations. Mrs. Christy is also working on many other projects with her other classes. The upper school students are working on sewing ornaments for the upcoming Winter Gala, and first grade will soon make baking soda and vinegar ornaments! Mrs. Christy has lots of exciting creations going on in art; stay tuned so you don't miss out on the creativity of her students!
These kids love art class.
