In Bible class, ninth graders started a Unit of Prayer. Last week they learned that Prayer is the breath in their relationship with God. Prayer is worshipful communication by which Christians talk to the Father, in the name of the Son, by the power of the Holy Spirit. Ninth grade learned ACTS method includes prayers of Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, and Supplication. This week, they learned about the importance of prayer.
Last week, ninth grade finished Physical Science, now they have a 45 minute Health class. They are learning healthy habits found in the Bible, genetics, temperament, and health professions.
In Dr. Wooten’s World History class, they recently stepped back in time while studying the Sumerians, one of the world’s earliest civilizations. As part of the lesson, students explored how the Sumerians developed cuneiform, one of the first known systems of writing.
To bring history to life, students created their own clay tablets and used styluses to write their names in cuneiform. They learned that cuneiform is not based on an alphabet but on a blend of sounds and symbols, pressed into soft clay to represent syllables and ideas. The hands-on activity helped students better understand how early writing systems worked and why the Sumerians’ innovations were so important to the development of civilization.

Every day in Physical Science, Mrs. Suttles gives the 9th graders a "Question of the Day". That day's question was "An ocean wave is an example of _____ wave." The answer was surface wave. The students had a test over chapter seventeen in their Physical Science book, but before doing the test, they practiced on Blooket. The test began at 1:40, and while the students work on it, Mrs. Suttles organizes assignments.
Within 10 to 15 minutes, all 9th graders were done with their tests. They said it was easy. During the time a few were working, 6th graders came in and put their computers on charge, before leaving as quickly as they came. After the test, Mrs. Suttles showed the class a video of a bridge in the Philippines being flipped over and over by a typhoon. For the rest of the class period, the students worked on worksheets/textbook activities with partners. And that is a 9th grade science class at First Academy.
The Ninth Grade is celebrating fall with October Madness. They began with 64 poems about everything from fall to death to childhood. The 64 were gradually narrowed down to the Sweet Sixteen, then to the winning poem, "Knoxville, Tennessee" by Nikki Giovanni, which surprisingly, beat out "Perfect" by Ed Sheeran and "A Thousand Years" by Christina Perri. Now the freshmen are writing their own fall poems, which must include three stanzas, a symbol, and a shift.

How to Write a Bad Essay
The freshmen have been learning how to write effective expository essays. Their challenge then became how to write a bad essay. They threw their worst spelling and grammar into their group essays. The other group then had to improve on what they wrote. Finally, each student had to write about their most life-changing event and an informational article from somewhere around the school for the Lion's Pen!
We rotated to five different stations to exercises to increase using better word choice; beginning sentences with more variety; avoiding fragments, fused, and comma splice sentences; active vs. passive voice; and MLA citations and formatting.

Read the short story by Jack Finney (author of The Body Snatchers) to find out. A very good example of the mastery of suspense--11 stories high in New York City.
