Charging into the New Year
By Lacie Reagin
Even though it’s only two weeks into the new year, Third Grade is full steam ahead! In their ELA class, they’re currently doing 10 minutes of sustained reading followed by a summary of what they’ve read that day. One student read the first chapter of I Survived the Great Molasses Flood, 1919 by Lauren Tarshish and gave an excellent summary of the chapter! As a writing assignment, students are working on writing dialogue between two characters, such as between classmates. Third Grade is also learning about elapsed time and learning how much time has passed between two intervals. They used examples such as a stop watch and what movie you could watch without the time overlapping another movie, and how long they would total in run-time.
In history, Third Grade is learning about several topics, which have continued into the New Year. So far, they’ve learned: in 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean blue; in 1620, the Pilgrims came to America for religious freedom; in 1775 the Revolutionary War began; and in 1776 the U.S. declared their independence. Along with major history events, they have learned of three major presidents: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and John Adams. One student has said she loves history because “we get to learn all about America’s past”!

3rd Graders Take Over the Chick-fil-A Kitchen!
On the 9th, our 3rd grade students had an awesome time learning about Chick-fil-A customer service and history! While they were there, they also got a backstage pass to the kitchen where they got to make their own biscuits. Then, they enjoyed a Chick-fil-A lunch and some time on the playground. Afterwards, they went to Wheeler Park for a nativity scavenger hunt!

A Class of Curious Minds!
By Lacie Reagin
On Thursday, Mrs. Cherie’s class did many fun activities! It was a review day in math for her class, which meant Blooklet and an activity to practice their division and multiplication facts. Their activity—separating goldfish equally between two partners and writing the division problem resulting from such— taught them a “one for you, one for me” method of division. This means that whenever their partner got one goldfish, they got one as well until the goldfish were divided equally.
Mrs. Cherie’s class is also learning more beyond just division and multiplication facts. In grammar, 3rd grade is learning what subject-verb agreement is. Along with this, they have been learning about cause and effect when reading. To apply this, they’ve read the historical fiction Finding Lincoln and made their own charts of words that indicate cause and effect, as well as where they see such concepts in their story!
Also, 3rd grade has been learning about the solar system in their science class. To remember what planets go where, they made a sorted planet chart!

On Thursday of this week, Mrs. Cherie's third graders partner up and work on their History Chapter 1 study guide together. They are seen enjoying getting to work together and help each other with the assignment.
On Thursday of last week, third grade read a book and did an activity with our school counselor, Mrs. Sarah. They read the book How Full is Your Bucket, then talked about the power of words and showing kindness and love to their neighbors. Everyone got their own jar, and had their classmates fill them with encouraging words and Bible verses on days that their "buckets" are feeling a little empty.
