March🍀
In Mrs. Holliday's ELA class, the fifth graders read the book of Esther in honor of the Jewish holiday Purim. This reading was interactive that involved the students repeating various phases and shaking noisemakers for when certain characters' names were mentioned. They also wore different crowns like the kings and queens throughout the story. Afterwards, the students poised in front of a backdrop for some pictures and celebrated by snacking on some doughnuts and hamantaschen cookies. The fifth graders had so much fun learning about this Jewish holiday!
February 💘
In February, the fifth graders have been working very hard! In ELA, they have learned about adjectives and adverbs and also the uses for three types of conjunctions: coordinating, correlative, and subordinating. Thay have also written essays for the "What America Means to Me" essay contest that is sponsored by American Legion Post 515. The fifth-grade winners are from left to right: 3rd - Jonathan Mai; 2nd - Virginia White; and 1st - Jude Paulk. These students' essays will be forwarded to Post 515 for the county-wide competition. The fifth graders have started reading "The One and Only Ivan."
In Mrs. Melody's Bible class, they have been studying Elisha and Elijah and the message they had from God to the people of Israel. The fifth graders have also been studying Ezra the scribe and the rebuilding of the temple in Jerusalem.
January 🎉
By Allie Gasque
In January, our fifth graders are diving into some exciting and important topics across their subjects. In History, students are learning about Ulysses S. Grant, the Reconstruction Acts, and the presidency of Andrew Johnson, helping them better understand the events and challenges that shaped the United States after the Civil War. These lessons encourage students to think critically about leadership, laws, and how the nation worked to rebuild during this time.
In the classroom, students are also strengthening key academic skills. In ELA, they are focusing on adjectives, adverbs, and practicing cursive writing to improve both their grammar and handwriting. In Math, students are learning to measure length using rulers, building practical measurement skills. In Science, they are exploring weather and the atmosphere, discovering how weather patterns form and how the atmosphere affects our everyday lives.
The fifth graders read an informational text entitled "Welcoming the New Year." These students learned about New Year's celebrations in China, Ecuador, and America: there were some interesting festivities for each country! They took notes and wrote a summary plus learned some new vocabulary words. Happy New Year, everyone! 🎆🧨2026🎉 🎊
December🌲
Today, the fifth graders enjoyed a recipe party. They wrote expository essays about their favorite foods and explained how to prepare them. Each student brought in the dish he or she wrote about to share with the class, and everyone enjoyed sampling a variety of delicious treats.
🍂November
The fifth graders are reading a story called Number the Stars by Lois Lowry. In the activity, they were diving deeper into the story's setting and learning more interesting things about it. Mrs Holliday put the kids into groups of two and three. They had to read a passage and get the right answers to finish the hunt. The fifth graders were building a background for the first few chapters they had already read. They had to go through five stations to get all the answers to the scavenger hunt.
The fifth graders loved working together and helping each other find the answers. They are so smart that they were done in no time. These kids love doing fun activities and do them so fast. Even though they had a few bumps in the road, they finally got it! They enjoyed Mrs. Holliday’s activities and had so much fun in the process!
