2nd Grade
Mrs. Alissa
Mrs. Alissa
🌽November
Mrs. Alissa’s second grade class was introduced to their new unit: Measurements. They removed the vocabulary words from their last unit over graphing. The class started their unit with a Sid the Science Kid video that talked about rulers and units of measurement. He was curious about the different types of rulers. Then the kids moved to the carpet to begin their next activity.
The second grade listened to Mrs. Alissa read How Big is A Foot? by Rolf Myller. The book is about a king gifting his wife, the queen, a bed, but because they had not been invented yet, he needs to make it from scratch. The king asks the queen to lie down and uses his feet to measure it out. He sends the measurements through the chain of command, where it finally arrives to the apprentice–who has much smaller feet. The apprentice tries to make the bed, but it is much too small. He then comes up with a standard of measurement after being thrown in jail. The book shows the importance of a standard of measurement. Second grade then did an interactive activity where they did the bed experiment. They had Bain act as the king, and Julian was the apprentice. Mrs. Alissa then used a proper ruler to show the difference between the measurements. They finished up with IXL.

Working on ELA worksheets in ELA

We've been working on map skills by identifying locations in each quadrant of a "City of Douglas map".
And there's room enough for everyone to learn about it on a map with partners.
