Our K-2 grade levels follow a very specific phonics sequence when teaching reading and writing. This is done to ensure that students can successfully decode words and not have gaps in their learning.
In kindergarten, phonics is taught through whole group, and small group, lessons. We also use decodable texts that specifically practice each of these phonics skills. We use a set of phonics stories called "Secret Stories" (however, we use the term Hidden Stories) that include engaging visuals to help remember the phonics rules.
The whole class will go through the alphabet lessons together, but as students become secure in their letter/sound knowledge, they will be moved to small groups that target the specific skills they are working on.
