Assignment 5: Create a Verse in Soundtrap

For this assignment you use what we have learned thus far in class to begin creating a song of your own. Today we will focus on the first section that we will think of as the verse although it might become another section later.

Review the attributes of verses

Verses:

  • Usually happen after the introduction of a song. If there is a singer/rapper it is what they usually sing first.

  • Details / Tells the story / background information

  • Melody repeats but the lyrics change every time there is a new verse (usually).

  • Usually sung by one person (if the chorus has a group of singers).

  • Usually has a mellower feel to it than the chorus.

Steps:

  1. Choose a beat that you would like to work with.

  2. Create a chord progression that uses both major and minor chords.

  3. Once you have a beat and chord progression you like, start creating a couple motifs that will become the melody of your song.

  4. Verses are usually mellower than the chorus.

  5. Review attributes of verses and choruses to help you compose.
