Class 7: Intro to Instrumentation

Assignment: Create a rich texture of music by adding drums, keyboards, guitars, and sound effects to the Drake remake that uses Timmy Thomas' "Why Can't We Live Together?" or "Shape of my Heart" loop.

For those of you who weren't able to import the loop into a project, I have created a project that is set up for adding instruments.

Click on this url to go to that project:

"Shape of My Lucid Dreams"

"Drake Remake"

Instrumentation:

  • Music usually starts out as just an idea (a melody, a lyric, a set of chords, a beat, or a sample).
  • For your project, you have been given a samples that inspired Drake and Juice WRLD to create a worldwide hit: Timmy Thomas' "Why Can't We Live Together?" and Sting's "Shape of My Heart."
  • Pick which sample loop you want to work with and click the link for the project.
  • Now you need to make it yours.
  • You can do so by adding new instrument parts.
  • We will go over the basic instrument groups that go in most pop songs.

  • Drums: You can create a drum track by taking sampled drums and dropping them in to the project or you can create a rhythm by using the beat maker.
  • Drums kits and beats don’t usually play tones so you don’t have to worry about matching keys.
  • For the rest of the instruments we need to make sure they match our key. We will talk more about key later. For the purposes of this assignment, we need to change the key of the project to C minor (Cm). If we don’t, the samples we use, won’t sound in tune with the Timmy Thomas track.

  • Also, when you choose samples, we need to choose “Only Minor Keys” so that they will match the key of the piece.
  • Keyboards: A lot of songs use keyboards (piano or synthesizer) to play chords and/or a countermelody.
  • Guitars: There are all kinds of different styles of guitars. You can choose from the samples to find a interesting match.
  • Sound FX: You can add texture to your piece by using sound effects in your piece, anything from wind to city sounds.
