Software Design and Development refers to the creativity, knowledge, values and communication skills required to develop computer programs. The subject provides students with a systematic approach to problem-solving, an opportunity to be creative, excellent career prospects and interesting content. Software development is a distinctive field within the Computing discipline.
Software Design and Development links well with other courses, such as Physics, Mathematics, Mathematics Extension 1, Information Technology and Information Processes and Technology.
Software Design and Development provides students with the flexibility to be able to adapt in a field that is constantly changing. On completion, the subject provides students with options in the workforce, TAFE and university study.
The Preliminary course introduces students to the basic concepts of computer software design and development. It does this by looking at the different ways in which software can be developed, the tools that can be used to assist in this process and by considering the interaction between software and the other components of the computer system.
The HSC course builds on the concepts developed in the Preliminary Course and asks students to develop and document software using a variety of data structures and language facilities. Through this course students will learn to solve a number of interesting and relevant software problems.
Activities include the design and building of computer software, looking at the developer’s view of hardware, programming languages and the interaction between hardware and software.
A variety of assessment procedures are employed including formal examinations, assignment work and a major project in the HSC Course.
