Students should have an interest in continuing the development of their mathematical skills and knowledge, and its applications to Mathematics in the real world. The outcomes and content in the Stage 6 Mathematics Standard syllabus are written with the assumption that students studying this course will have engaged with all substrands of Stage 5 (Core) and with the following substrands of Stage 5 (Core) - Financial mathematics, Linear relationships, Non-linear relationships, Right-angled triangles (Trigonometry), Single variable data analysis and Probability.
Students may not study any other Stage 6 Mathematics course in conjunction with Mathematics Standard.
The Mathematics Standard course is focused on enabling students to use Mathematics effectively, efficiently and critically to make informed decisions in their daily lives. The Mathematics Standard course is the base course for the Year 12 Mathematics Standard 1 and Mathematics Standard 2 courses. As a result, the Year 11 Mathematics Standard course is offered in two tiers:
All students who elect to study the Mathematics Standard course will be placed in a Mathematics Standard class. At the conclusion of the first Year 11 topic, feedback will be gained from students about their preference for project-based learning , future career pathways and ATAR pathway. Students will then be given the option to transition to the Maths in Trades course if appropriate.
A scientific calculator is essential for any student studying a Mathematics course. A nominal fee is charged to cover the purchase of an online Mathematical revision and practise program.
Students studying the HSC Mathematics Standard 1 course may elect to undertake an optional HSC examination. To be eligible for an ATAR, students studying the HSC Mathematics Standard 1 course must undertake a pattern of study to satisfy the ATAR requirements and complete the optional HSC examination.
The progress of students will be assessed throughout the course by a range of tasks such as open book tests, examination, projects and/or assignments with a final HSC examination being sat (optional for those students who elect to do Mathematics Standard 1 in Year 12).
