While this course builds on the PDHPE and Recreation Studies courses in Stage 4 and 5, it has many active components. You will need to be prepared to cover both theoretical and practical experiences. It requires students to be self-motivated, independent learners that are able to demonstrate commitment to safety standards in meeting course requirements.
Projects developed for assessment in this course may not be used either in full or in part for assessment in another course.
This course is designed for students to learn about the importance of a healthy and active lifestyle. The focus is on hands-on practical experiences. Students are encouraged to establish a lifelong commitment to being physically active and to achieving their movement potential. The course provides the opportunities to specialise in various modules of expertise or interest such as: aquatics, athletics, first aid, fitness, specific sports, gymnastics, outdoor recreation, sports administration, coaching, social perspectives of sport, and a healthy lifestyle.

The assessment for this course is school based assessment. There is no external HSC exam. Assessment activities can include both theoretical and practical experiences. In the past students have had assessment tasks on aspects of aquatics, fitness, sports coaching, sports application and various recreational activities.
NOTE: There is a compulsory 2 day practical assessment at the swimming pool.
Preliminary have a course fee of $120 while HSC students have a course fee of $90. This fee is to cover the hiring of equipment, use of outside school venues and transportation when required. Other costs may be involved with external excursions not specified in the regular program.
