Excellent levels of achievement in Ancient History or Modern History; strong independent research and wide-reading skills.
History Extension involves closely examining and evaluating the ideas and processes used by historians. Students investigate the question “What is History?” through various readings and other media studies as well as one case study. The case study can be selected from topics already familiar to students through their current work in Ancient or Modern History, or students can negotiate to complete a case study in an area they have not had the opportunity to explore at a senior level, such as Medieval and Australian history. Students are also to design, undertake and communicate their own personal historical inquiry into an area of particular interest.
Part I: Constructing History
Students explore the Key questions:
Who are the Historians?
What are the aims and purposes of History?
How has history been constructed and recorded over time?
Why have the approaches to history changed over time?
Students investigate one case study selected from a wide variety of ancient, medieval, modern, Asian and Australian options.
Part II: History Project
An original piece of historical investigation. Students complete a Proposal, Essay, Bibliography and Process log
