In the 21st Century, Microsoft has had a monopoly of OS's in desktops. Microsoft realising this, decided that their other developed software should be further pushed within their own OS, Windows. One software in particular, Internet Explorer became continuously pushed with each generation of Windows. This lead to Microsoft making Internet Explorer 4.0 integrate into Windows while making it considerably harder to change/remove. This lead to a competing web browser Netscape to sue Microsoft for them taking advantage of their monopoly to silently push out their competitors and promote their own software.

In the defence of Microsoft, they produced a secret Email message stating that Netscape wanted Microsoft cooperation stating that it would stay out of its way just as long as Microsoft would invest into Netscape. They also mentioned that the allegations were false as Netscape browsers were widely distributed when compared to Microsoft's Internet Explorer. In this diagram during the late 1990s, Netscape does hold the majority of the distributions however this slowly became less true as internet explorer grew into relevancy.
Netscape's argument against Microsoft was that their monopoly of OS's in desktop lead them to conduct predatory actions via their software, in particular Internet Explorers fourth generation, would become integrated into the Windows operating system. Netscape's intention was for success however, they did not want for Microsoft's failure in the process however, Netscape believed that Microsoft used ill practices to push Internet Explorer and thus, sued them for an antitrust case breach.
The case began in 1996 and ended in late 2002, and although Netscape won the legal case by the time it had finalised Netscape’s user-base had dropped dramatically. This is because of the fact that Internet Explorer shipped for free with Microsoft Windows and eventually became one of the dominant web browsers before its transformation into Microsoft Edge. This then lead onto the second generation web browser war. Where after the death of both Internet Explorer and Netscape, arises Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Edge and Googles take on web browser, Google Chrome, as well as other various web browsers.
The result of the Netscape vs Microsoft case did however put on the spotlight on how software developers fairly market their own product and the ethical implications that can occur due to predatory behaviour and as such, understanding how to both advertise your product whilst respecting your competition is vital for you/your company's integrity regardless of what positional power you may be situated in.
