Arroyo de la Luz is a municipality located in the province of Cáceres, In this town funded in the XIIIth century we will visit the church dating from the XVI century, which was declared a National Monument in 1981, with a magnificent altarpiece painted by one of the most famous Renaissance artists from Badajoz, Luis de Morales.

The altarpiece
It consists of 20 pictures in tables made by Luis de Morales between 1560-1563. It is considered his masterpiece, and it is the largest collection of works of the author preserved in the same place where they were created, and has become one of the jewels Renaissance art in Extremadura
Here we find the tenderness and delicacy of Jesus the Child, the sublime greatness of the drama of the Passion. The famous Madonnas, of marked Italian influence, with an oval face, drooping eyelids, beautiful hair, transparent veils.
The purpose of the altarpiece is to teach the parishioners the biblical scriptures and also to embellish and to give splendor to the altar.
The potters of Arroyo de la Luz were already known in the Spanish markets of the sixteenth century for their unpainted pottery. The artisans produced household objects: pitchers, vases, jars, pots, stoves ... In 1846 the town had 60 factories. Nowadays, the number of potters has been reduced, and although the production has prevailed as a practical function as ovens, barbecues, there has been a transformation which has gained in quality and art.
