Frottage: Create with The Rubbing Technique
The Belgian world-famous artist Pierre Alechinsky used this technique.
Participants are requested to make “rubbings” ( or stampings”) of manhole covers in their city
Use manhole covers with the NAME of your City ( or the name of a city of your country) Or with texts in your language ( like here above : Ville d’Arles in France) text in Polish in Italian and in Spanish.
Kind of paper
You can do a rubbing on a sheet of tissue papers ( or silk papers) or Japanese papers
How to do this rubbing ?
Put the paper on the man-hole cover, and you rub it with
oil/ fatty pastels ( black or blue or red)
or you use a little brush with Indian ink
Or you use oil ink used for engraving
The result must be POSITIVE
Size : it depends on the “man-hole” you choose to rub
You can easily fold the papers with the rubbings
What’s the goal of this ?
With all your ‘rubbing papers’ from the different cities and countries we will make an International Collective Work of Art .
Check these sites to understand the technique
The RUBBING idea is based on Alechinsly’s technique : to make RUBBINGS and to use THEM as “background” for HIS paintings .
If you watch the work of this artist on the link below you’ll understand it better.
