The elaboration of the decoration of an ellipsoidal dish will be followed by its implementation. The glass will be cut, the pieces will be joined together by stacking them in the kiln. The temperature of the kiln will depend on the desired effect to be achieved. After firing the dish, it will be possible to further process it by sandblasting or milling.
Instructions for the glass fusion workshop
Glass fusion means building a new block of glass in a solid state, by assembling different pieces that, on a heat varying from 800 to 850 ° C become so fluid that they are irreversibly joined.
The cooling is slow, regulated so as to allow the recovery of the molecular stability the material possessed before being heated.
Glass fusion leads to the production of polychrome objects. if compounds colored with oxides are used.
Heat and gravity are the two most important tools for an artist. The possible combinations of color and texture are endless.
The glass fusing technique has ancient origins: the first evidence of this technique dates back to the times of the Egyptians and the Romans. This technique was used to create the tools essential for daily life such as combs, forks and knives, cups and glasses, which later began to be produced with the invention of glass blowing . But the widespread use of glass fusion as an artistic form occured in the seventies when it was rediscovered by American artisans and artists. This is a technique that requires great skills, lots of experimentation, in-depth knowledge of the physical characteristics of glass at high temperatures and improvisation ability in working the hot material
The steps of glass processing: the glass fusion process is divided into specific phases that must follow each other in a very precise order, to avoid glass breakage or errors in creation. The elaboration of the project of the manufactured object to be created in a 1:1 scale is followed by the cut of the glass and the cleaning of the different pieces. To make the pieces, place the plate on top of the drawing and cut it with the help of a glass cutter following the lines of the motif. In this way different pieces are obtained which will then be joined together, superimposed or laid on the base plate.
The firing to which the assembled pieces are subjected depends on the type of result to be obtained. After having fired the pieces, if the result does not yet satisfy your tastes, you can proceed with annealing or with one or more cold processes after firing such as sandblasting or grinding.
