Lorenzo de' Medici, duke of Urbino

The portrait of Lorenzo De Medici, Duke of Urbino (Florence 1492-1519) is the work of Raphael Sanzio. Despite his beautiful in appearance, Lorenzo’s fame was well inferior due to his lack of energy and courage. The portrait is an oil painting on canvas by Raphael commissioned just before his wedding. The Duke of Urbino is represented in all his noble magnificence, highlighted by the baroque clothing that defines his social stature. The background is anonymous and devoid of spatiality.

Clarice de Medici

Clarice (Florence1489Florence 1528) was the only daughter of Piero de Medici and Alfonsina Orsini. In 1508 she married Filippo Strozzi and she trasferred to Rome. After the premature death of her brother she nortured her niece Caterina de Medici. Clarice is represented half length, in a three-quarter position and her pensive gaze is addressed to the viewer. The background is dark and compact and crashes with the light sumptuous dress of the young woman.

Alessandro Il Moro

The portrait of Alessandro De Medici, known as the ‘Moro’ (Firenze 1510-1537), was painted by Agnolo Bronzino. He was Duke of Pens then Lord of Florence and then first Duke of Florence. He was assassinated in 1537 by Lorenzino de' Medici. The portrait is in the Renaissance style. The subject is within a dark environment devoid of spatiality or light, thus highlighting the almost centrally-represented face. The Duke’s gaze appears defiant, framed in the elegant military fabric that tightens around his neck.
