Step 1: Selecting the Image

The first step in your Famous Artist Painting Project is to pick the image you would like to draw & paint. Watch the "Image from Google Drive" video to see how to access an image from the "Famous Artist Paintings" folder & download it to your computer or Google Drive. YOU MAY NEED TO SIGN IN TO YOUR STUDENT GOOGLE ACCOUNT FIRST TO WATCH THE VIDEOS. In order to print from one of the art room computers, follow the instructions on the wall above the computers.

Step 2: The Width to Height Ratio

When you want to draw an image so that it is either larger or smaller than the source image (the image you are drawing from) you will need to scale the image up or down. This video explains the importance of the width to height ratio so as to not distort images when resizing them. It also explains how to cut only one side of the 12" X 18" paper you will be using.

Note: If you're cutting your paper smaller than 12" by 12" you're doing something wrong.

Step 3: Large Papers Dimensions

This video will show you how to use the photo editing program Photopea to calculate the width and height of your drawing paper.

**** REMEMBER TO WRITE DOWN THE DIMENSIONS SO YOU KNOW WHAT SIZE TO CUT YOUR PAPER!!!*****

If you wish to learn how the math works and calculate the dimensions of the paper manually instead of using Photopea, you can watch this video. Advanced artists should learn this as you may not always have a computer to where you can use Photopea.

Step 4: Gridding the Source Image

In order to get proper placement & proportion of complex images, many artists and students will use a grid. This grid is different from the face drawing grid as it doesn't have the additional sections (lines) in the center. Download it and place it in the art folder I shared with you. Then watch the video so show you how to apply the grid to the image you've chosen to draw. You will then export the gridded version as a jpg to either print or view on your screen when drawing to the larger drawing paper. In order to print from one of the art room computers, follow the instructions on the wall above the computers.

If you would like to learn how to create your own grid on a drawing then you can watch this video.

If you would rather get a printout of your source image and fold it to create the grid, you can watch this video.

Step 5: Gridding, & Drawing on the Large Paper

Use a ruler to divide your drawing paper into four sections wide by four sections high. If you have difficulty with measurements or reading a ruler or with the math, make sure to get help from the teacher or someone who knows how to do this such as a classmate or family member.

Step 6: Painting

This video will show you some basic strategies to painting. It focuses on...

1) Moving from the Background to the Foreground

2) Moving from Light to Dark

3)Move from the General to the Specific

4) Let the size of the area you are painting dictate the size of the brush that you use.
