Impressionist Style Painting

Step 1: Definition & Examples

Before you can do an impressionist style painting you need to know what impressionism is and what impressionist style paintings look like. Watch this video to learn about both. You will have to do work that is considered original, so you will have to use a picture that you, a family member, or friend took. For this project, you can't get an image off of the Internet. Click on the link to the folder to see some past student examples. Looking at these examples will give you a good idea of the type of photograph you should use for your project. A student favorite is doing a painting of a family pet. Other favorite subjects for students include close ups of flowers, vehicles, homes, and family members.

Step 2: Cropping your Photo

Unlike the Famous Artist Painting where you had to calculate the dimensions of the paper you were drawing on to match your source image, you will do the opposite here. You are going to crop your source image so the width to height ratio of it matches that of the paper you are going to draw it on. Again you will be using Photopea to do this. Watch this video to see how this is done.

Step 3: Making the Source Image Look Impressionistic

Impressionist style painting makes it look as if the viewer just glimpsed what they were looking at and removes a lot of the fine detail. This will also make painting your painting a lot easier. You could try to envision this yourself, but since you are a beginner it's a good idea to use a filter in Photopea to eliminate a lot of that detail and do the work for you. Watch this video to see how to make your source image look more impressionistic.

Step 4: Gridding the Source Image

Videos 4 thru 6 utilize the same process/es used in the Famous Artist Painting and are here for your review if you need to refresh your memory on the remaining steps.

In order to get proper placement & proportion of complex images, many artists and students will use a grid. DOWNLOAD THE GRID in this section to your computer or Google Drive on your Chromebook. Then watch the video so show you how to apply the grid to the image you've chosen to draw. You will then export the gridded version as a jpg to either print or view on your screen when drawing to the larger drawing paper.

If you would like to learn how to create your own grid on a drawing then you can watch this video.

If you would rather get a printout of your source image and fold it to create the grid, you can watch this video.

Step 5: Gridding, & Drawing on the Large Paper

Use a ruler to divide your drawing paper into four sections wide by four sections high. If you have difficulty with measurements or reading a ruler or with the math, make sure to get help from the teacher or someone who knows how to do this such as a classmate or family member.

Step 6: Painting

This video will show you some basic strategies to painting. It focuses on...

1) Moving from the Background to the Foreground

2) Moving from Light to Dark

3)Move from the General to the Specific

4) Let the size of the area you are painting dictate the size of the brush that you use.
