ARTWORK PREPARATION

These general steps are the steps you will use for the majority of your art projects in this class. For specific instructions on each project go to that project's webpage.

Step 1: Getting the Source Image

If you do an image search, two of the most popular options are Google & Bing. I prefer Bing because of the way it handles the images. Make sure to click on the filter icon & select the "Large" image option to guarantee the image you select will be of good quality and not pixelated. You want to select a picture that will be challenging to you, but one that you will be capable of doing. Once you think you’ve picked out a picture you’d like to do, have Mr. Stav look at it so he can determine whether or not it will be a good picture for you. Remember, you want to pick an image that is appropriate for the level of art that you are in. If you're not quite sure how to select a good quality image watch either the YouTube video (by clicking on the icon) or the Google Drive video (by clicking on the title).

Step 2: Width to Height Ratio

When replicating an image you will want the width to height ratio of the source image to match that of the paper you are drawing to. To do this you will need to do one of 2 things...

A) Cut the drawing paper so it matches the W to H ratio of the source image (Step 2a)

B) Crop the source image so that it matches the W to H ratio of the drawing paper. (Step 2b)

Step 2a: Cutting the Drawing Paper

This video will show you how to use the photo editing program Photopea to calculate the width and height of your drawing paper.

**** REMEMBER TO WRITE DOWN THE DIMENSIONS SO YOU KNOW WHAT SIZE TO CUT YOUR PAPER!!!*****

If you wish to learn how the math works and calculate the dimensions of the paper manually instead of using Photopea, you can watch this video using the width to height ratio w/h = W/H. The width is to the height on the small paper (source image) as the WIDTH is to the HEIGHT on the large paper (blank paper). Advanced artists should learn this as you may not always have a computer to where you can use Photopea.

Step 2b: Cropping the Source Image

This video will show you how to crop your source image so the width to height ratio of it matches that of the paper you are going to draw it on. You will use Photopea to do this step as well. Watch this video to see how this is done.

Step 3: Gridding the Source Image

In order to get proper placement & proportion of complex images, many artists and students will use a grid. DOWNLOAD THE GRID in this section to your computer or Google Drive on your Chromebook. Then watch the video so show you how to apply the grid to the image you've chosen to draw. You will then export the gridded version as a jpg to either print or view on your screen when drawing to the larger drawing paper.

If you would like to learn how to create your own grid on a drawing then you can watch this video.

If you would rather get a printout of your source image and fold it to create the grid, you can watch this video.

Step 4: Gridding, & Drawing on the Large Paper

Use a ruler to divide your drawing paper into four equal sections wide by four equal sections high. If you have difficulty with measurements or reading a ruler or with the math, make sure to get help from the teacher or someone who knows how to do this such as a classmate or family member.
