Topic 1: The dangers that might happen
in everyday life

The loss of human life and property each year is substantial including the economic loss caused by several reasons. Someone may not have died, but became disabled and a burden to family and society.



Risk factors

1. Food consumption. Getting more the nutrients than our body needs as well as the amount of fat accumulated is harmful; it causes illness or malnutrition. Moreover, we should be aware of contaminants in food such as MSG, food coloring, chemical residues in vegetables, fish, pork, chicken, etc. and apply the information already provided to our consumption.



2. Non-food consumption. These are not essential to life, but they are the values and beliefs of society such as tonic and food supplements.



3. Having sex. Sexually promiscuous people and homosexuals may be exposed to severe harm to life and health.



4. The addictive drugs. Different kinds of drugs have been developed which are dangerous to life and health. People who use drugs might become impaired for the rest of their life.



5. Using the road. Traffic accidents create great for both, the body and property. Statistics show a high rate of traffic accidents, so everyone should follow traffic rules strictly.


6. Water traffic. At present, water traffic has increased. Although it is not as dense as road traffic, but that the increased rate of water traffic causes boat wreckage. People might die, get injured and lose their property from such incidents.


7. Sports and exercise. If do not done properly, it might have a negative effect on our health. Warm-up and cool down should be indispensable before and after exercise.


8. Drug treatment. If medicine is used in the wrong way or not appropriate to the disease, dose and time, it can cause more server symptoms of drug abuse. Also the use of expired drugs can be harmful to life.


9. The use of house equipment such as electric appliances, television, telephone, computer, washing machine, rice cooker, etc. may cause dangers to health and safety. It may cause electrical shock or burns, so we should read the manual carefully.



10. Occupation. Many careers are insecure for health and life. We have to find the ways to protect ourselves such as eyes protection, mask, boots, gloves, etc.


11. The environment currently is getting worse because of human’s action. This directly impacts health and safety. Dirty rivers cannot be used for consumption. Moreover, aquatic animals cannot survive in the river. Environmental pollution causes food shortages. Unhealthy air causes respiratory diseases.



12. Violence in Thailand has several forms such as family conflicts, the race against youth, the conflicts of interest, and the political opposition. These things impact our safety everyday life.

To prevent and avoid risks in life

Ways to prevent and avoid risks to life and property are as follows.

1. To follow the nutritional advice, Details are in Lesson 3 food and nutrition.

2. To behave according to instructions to avoid sexually transmitted diseases and illnesses.

3. To avoid and prevent the use of drugs.

4. To prevent from and avoid the risks on roads, traffic regulations and laws relating to traffic safety such as the use of seat belts must be strictly followed, do not drink alcoholic beverages, do not take medicine that might make you sleepy and do not speed faster than the laws allows. Lack of sleep may cause sleeping with open eyes.

5. Before playing sports or exercising one should warm up. Be careful in the use of sports equipment and exercise appropriate to age.

6. Before taking medicine read the direction carefully or follow the advice given by the doctor or pharmacist. If something goes wrong, you should consult a doctor immediately.

7. When using domestic gas cooking appliances, knives etc. to learn how to monitor and follow safety rules to prevent electric shock and fire.

8. Environment. Learn how to prevent sound pollution, solid waste and air pollution, and study ways to dispose of it properly.

9. Occupations with high risk. We have to care about the state of the profession, such as spraying the solution. Use tools with care, do not underestimate the dangers of welding near a gas tank. After the valve on the gas tank from the stove is closed, turn off the fire.
