Topic 10: Meaning and importance of recreation

Recreations are activities done voluntarily in the free time. The activities are not part of an occupation, not against the law, not against moral and tradition but are beneficial and relaxing for body and mind.

Our daily life is often organized into four time periods

1.1 Working about 8 hours

1.2 about 4-6 hours of personal activities, e.g. taking a shower, washing the face, brushing the teeth, cooking food and eating.

1.3 About 8 sleeping hours

1.4 About 2-4 hours leisure time

These 2-4 hours can be applied to useful activities we may call recreation. It is the time when the body relaxes from stress. This time should be fun and enjoyable to be beneficial for physical and mental health.

Advantages of recreation

Recreation for life, if we choose recreation properly, it will benefit ourselves and society in various ways.

1. The benefit to physical health,

the development of technology today will cause us not to exercise during work because there are tools and machines to help us. So we will have little exercise. This means, we have to find recreation in sports or exercises to stay healthy.

2. The benefit to mental health,

it will help to relax and reduce stress. Many types of recreational activities are relaxing such as watching TV, listening to music, watching movie etc.

3. The benefit to family,

it will help a family to spend their free time beneficially for themselves and the family such as gardening, flowering which will provide satisfaction in the form of usable vegetables, fruits, and flowers.

4. The benefit for society,

various types of recreation will be beneficial for society directly such as social welfare activities, voluntary activities and some activities which reduce social problems.
