Topic 3: Influenza














Influence or “flu” is an infectious viral disease. It is often confused with other influenza-like illnesses, such as the common cold. Influenza is a seasonal epidemic during rainy season and cold season.

Causes - The influenza virus is transmitted through the air by aerosols from coughing or sneezing. Influenza can also be transmitted by direct contact with contaminated surfaces.

Symptoms of influenza may include:

  • Fever and extreme coldness (chills shivering, shaking (rigor))

  • Cough

  • Nasal congestion

  • Runny nose

  • Body aches, especially joints and throat

  • Fatigue

  • Headache

  • Irritated, watering eyes

  • Reddened eyes, skin (especially face), mouth, throat and nose


Treatment

1. Sleep and rest a lot in a well-ventilated place.

2. Always keep body warm by wearing thick clothes and blankets.

3. Exercise appropriately, but do not overdo

4. Drink a lot and eat all 5 groups of food.

5. Take Paracetamol to relieve fever and muscle pain.

6. Seek medical advice if the symptoms persist for several consecutive days because of complications.


Prevention of influenza infection

1. Sufficiently exercise and rest

2. Eat food sufficient in all 5 groups of nutrient.

3. Avoid being close or sharing items with patients

4. Cover mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing

5. Avoid crowded places and insufficient ventilation.

6. Frequently wash your hands with soap
