(Welcome back from maternity leave!)
Schoolwide focus for January: Self Talk
Self talk is what we say to ourselves (positive or negative).
Positive self talk helps me feel better and calm down.
Some positive statements I can say to myself are:
"I can do it."
"I won't give up."
"This is hard but I believe in myself."

The SAC meeting held on the morning of Friday the 13th was a great meeting, thank you to all who attended! Angela Frank, the Vice Chairperson and our representative on the SACPIE gave an awesome and informative presentation. She covered the value of parent engagement within schools, discussed studies that showed how such parental engagement impacts schools, and offered ideas on how we can encourage even more engagement from our awesome parent community.
Our next meeting will be held on Friday, February 10th at 7:30am. Our meetings, as always, are open to all NRE community members and we hope you will consider attending if you have not done so in the past. Feel free to bring along your kiddos, and send them off to class once the morning bell rings. We think attending SAC meetings is one great way to demonstrate and encourage your children to be involved and speak-up and out in areas that are important to them.
Here is the link of the GoogleSlides used in the presentation. Unfortunately, Zoom and Wifi were not on our side today and a recording did not take place.
Lindsey Regoli - DBC Representative
Q: What does Someone in your role on the SAC do?
a: As the Discovery Booster Club president, my role on SAC is to represent the Discovery community and the five Discovery classes by providing input and recommendations on policies, programs, and initiatives related to student learning and achievement.
Q: Why did you join the SAC?
a: I have a desire to be more involved in the school, a belief in the importance of education, and would like to contribute to the improvement of NRE. I have a strong commitment to education and believe all students deserve access to high quality learning opportunities. I have a two current students and one who will start at NRE in the near future, so I have a strong personal stake in ensuring that our school is providing the best possible education for all students.
Q: What are some interesting facts about you?
a: I was an English teacher for nine years and have a M.A. in Educational Administration. I taught predominantly in the Bay Area where my husband and I lived for about ten years before returning home to Colorado.
Dear NRE Community -
I hope the holidays were a time for you to spend with family and friends. My break went a little different than expected as I thought I would be back in Buffalo, NY more specifically Grand Island to help my best friend throw her daughter's graduation party but due to the blizzard and the Southwest debacle, I was in Denver for the break.
How many of you watch football and saw what happened to Damar when the Bengals and the Bills played each other Monday Night? I had my Josh Allen jersey on and my Buffalo Bills hat on and was ready for the game until everything went silent. In that moment on the field in case you didn't see it, Damar collapsed and for 20+ minutes the NFL world came to a stop. The fans, the players, the online watchers and every football fan across America watched what would happen next. I will spare you all of the details but over the next couple minutes, hours, and weeks, it was a true miracle to see what happened. Not only did Damar come back from a stopped heart beat, they canceled a NFL game, no one complained, AND people joined together as one and fought for something bigger, a life. Bengals fans joined the Bills Mafia FaceBook page to offer prayers and words of encouragement, people from our biggest rivals stopped to offer support, and most importantly, people stood side by side outside the hospital in unity to show support to Damar's family. I was in awe because it truly brought people together for something that is more important than football, the human race. I wonder what we could do if we supported one another world wide with the love that Buffalo, the players, fans, and family members displayed the last couple of weeks. This is my goal in life.
I was excited to see our fabulous NRE staff on Monday and we all looked rested after having what felt like an extremely long two weeks off. Staff were excited to have kids back in the building, ready for the second semester, and ready to see the students and all the personality that comes with each one. We had a good planning day and then welcome students back on Tuesday. The week flew by so fast that I cannot believe it's already Friday.
Today we held our Spelling Bee to get to our sole finalist who will move on to the district level competition. It was quite the competition with lots of words, definitions, nerves, and excitement all bottled up in the gym. Congratulations to our 4th - 6th graders finalists that entered into the Spelling Bee as it is so nerve-wracking, they are as follows 4th Grade: Wyatt, Jyosha, Burton, Lamle, Asher, Ella, Ayantika, Finn, Caleb, 5th Grade: Wyatt, Reid, Preston, Nate, Kendall, Cadence, Mario, Anna, Declan, and 6th Grade: Siddharth, Madison, Lucy, Quentin, Jace, Diksha, Alex, Ellie, Keira, and Dillon. It truly came down to the last two students. Jyosha and Alex and then went back and forth. Our sole finalist who will move forward is.... drum roll please... Alex who is in 6th grade. Congratulations to all of you for being so brave to get up on the stage in front of your peers, parents and staff and spell your hearts out. I am beyond proud of you.
My favorite part of the Spelling Bee was watching students pick one another up after the disappointment of getting a word wrong. Students congratulated the participants, told them they were proud of them, gave them knuckles or hugs and it was a beautiful sight. No one asked them to do this; they just took care of their classmates and friends. Each day I strive to be better. How do we learn from the scariness of what happened with almost losing a football player in front of our nation and how it brought people together? How do we continue to bring people together because it's the right thing to do without the need for devastation? We shouldn't need a blizzard, a war, a death, or a travesty to reach out to others. I'll get off my soap box but I would love if you take a moment and think about what positive change you could start today that might help someone else? Sometimes it's the smallest things that make the biggest impacts. I appreciate you reading this letter from me. If you are reading it, it means you are setting aside the time to know what is happening around NRE and all of the new things for this semester. Thank you. One day at a time, one student at a time, one positive change at a time. We've got this!
