The place I chose for my project was Baroffio’s Garage located on North Main Street. I chose it because I really wanted to represent the small family businesses of Northfield and I know that Baroffio’s has been one of the longest family owned and operated businesses in town. My personal connection to Baroffio’s Garage is quite obvious, I, myself am a Baroffio. My father, grandfather, and great uncle work there currently and I thought it would be fun to create a banner for a place that I know inside-out. I have grown up around the shop and I thought it would be interesting to do for a school project. In making my banner I wanted to highlight the bay doors and the signs for the garage. I think the bay doors are a big part of what an automotive garage is so I wanted to make sure I included them into the banner. The signs are self explanatory, I wanted to highlight them to give the shop a name and make the building more recognizable. From John Knox’s photography I learned that angles are important when grabbing the attention of viewers, I kept that in mind when I was taking my photos and ultimately chose a photo that I thought drew in the eyes of viewers to the middle of the photo using angles. In Sabra Fields' work I noted her color block and color scheme techniques and that impacted the design of my banner, taking in the simplistic design and using it in my own banner. Some things that I added into my banner that weren’t in the actual photo I took include the green mountains to the left. I thought adding the mountains in the background would enhance the banner by adding more color blocks rather than having the house that is in the real photo background. I also removed an old vending machine that wasn’t great looking so it wouldn't distract onlookers from the garage building.
