The image I chose to paint on my banner is the view from the top of Paine Mountain. The scene includes the old ski lift structure and the rolling hills in the background. I selected this scene because I think that it truly grasps the beauty of the Vermont mountains and the town of Northfield nestled between them. The old ski lift acts as the main point of interest in the picture, it draws the eyes and also gives the artwork a purpose. The bright colors of the paint on the concrete ski lift and the colors of the sunset over the rolling green hills in the background are the core of the color on my banner. These elements are critical because of how they create a balance between foreground and background. I took a lot of inspiration from John Knox’s photography. It helped me get an idea of how to use different elements of depth within a photo, like foreground, middleground and background. I used these elements in my photography as well as in my final banner project. I also took inspiration from the very simplistic works of Sabra Field. I tried to emulate her use of solid colors and straight lines to give my banner a similar simple beauty. I chose to call my banner “History of the Hills”. This title sounds nice and also gives insight on the main focus of the project; the historical significance of the ski lift for our town.
