I chose the topic of immigration, which in 2020 entered one of its most alarming periods in our nation's history. With the detainment of thousands of people and the separation of children, as young as newborns, from their parents, I was deeply and profoundly horrified. This, sadly, is not the only time in history that policy has determined the destiny of peoples from other countries wanting to grow and prosper within our great nation. COURAGE, one of Northfield Middle and High School’s three core values, is a central theme in this. Courage is a quality shown by immigrants throughout the ages, who have risked everything to try and better their lives; courage is also a quality needed by United States citizens today, to stand up for a more just and compassionate approach to immigration.
When constructing my arpillera, I oriented my piece to be read from right to left to signify the European migration from east to west. The Mayflower heading into the sunset signifies a bright, beautiful, new beginning. Following the timeline, the middle section represents Ellis Island, and the far-left side finishes with images from contemporary times at our Southern border with Mexico. The families playing on either side of “the wall” and the stark contrast between “our” side and “their” side is a visual statement about the resilience of the human race no matter the efforts of others to intimidate and control. The “American” dream feels tarnished.
I feel that the class really forged some connections to many social issues and learned to listen intently, give constructive criticism, and make and suggest changes respectfully within a diverse group. This kind of project is a process and incorporates so many heartfelt and magical moments. I hope that as a community you all can feel and empathize with the students’ work and passion.
