This section of the site was created to provide a space where both ITGL cohort students and Extended Learning Sites can collaborate around and learn about Extended Learning.

This page provides the following information:

Extended Learning Overview

Extended learning refers to educational opportunities that extend beyond the traditional classroom setting, offering our ITGL students a variety of experiences to deepen their knowledge, skills, and personal growth. These extended learning opportunities can be face-to-face, hybrid or online.

During Extended Learning, ITGL Cohort candidates gain a comprehensive understanding of the different educational models employed in their focus area through exposure to a variety of educational experiences that prepare them to become Global Education Leaders.

Each experience aligns itself to the five focus areas of study: Creative and Innovative Education, Digital Age Teaching and Learning, Entrepreneurial Education, Early Childhood, and Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL). The expectation is for our students to interact and engage for up to 4 hours a week as part of their Extended Learning opportunity.

Extended Learning Objectives

Apply critical thinking to identify best practices within their area of study.
Apply critical thinking to identify best practices within their area of study.
Synthesize knowledge across courses and other experiences.

Additional objectives include:

~ Applying authentic American Education experiences back to each program focus area related to the student's interest.

~ Providing students the opportunity to embed themselves in a particular area of the educational field and interact with professionals who have years of experience in the area.

~ Embedding with Extended Learning activities that are anchored in everyday practice and that are focused on developing the student's ability to solve problems as educational professionals.

~ Providing the opportunity to strengthen key soft skill areas critical to the success of an educational professional by working in K-12 schools, educational organizations, and higher institutes of learning - communication, enthusiasm and attitude, teamwork, networking, problem-solving and critical thinking, and professionalism.

~ Assisting students to make decisions about their long-term educational career goals.

Extended Learning Expectations

For both the fall and spring semesters, students will spend up to four hours a week engaged with their selected Extended Learning Opportunity.

Students are expected to...

Commit to participate and understand the responsibilities of the Extended Learning Opportunity that includes:

~ Spending up to four hours a week engaged with their selected Extended Learning Opportunity;

~ Assisting in a way that their mentor sees fit;

~ Contacting the Extended Learning mentor to confirm all logistics (date/time, arrangements, etc.);

~ Reporting to the Extended Learning Opportunity promptly; notify mentor and coordinator immediately if illness or emergency prevents reporting to the opportunity;

~ Observing the Extended Learning Opportunities rules and regulations, as well as demonstrate good employability skills including a cooperative attitude, appropriate dress, and a willingness to learn. Any non-adherence could result in removal from the opportunity; and

~ Arranging for transportation to and from the Extended Learning Opportunity if needed/identified.

Mentors are expected to...

Assume full responsibility for planning and execution of the student's Extended Learning Opportunity that includes:

~ Coordinating a weekly schedule that provides them with up to four hours of time each week;

~ Providing a realistic view of a specific job;

~ Allowing students to observe and engage with educational professionals at the opportunity site ;

~ Allowing students time to ask questions;

~ Provide the student challenging work activities that aid in acquiring competencies necessary to advance in the educational field;

~ Reinforce an expectation of appropriate conduct while engaging in the opportunity;

~ Communicate on logistics, school policies, and exact expectations, duties, and responsibilities of the opportunity;

~ Encourage students to effectively carry out the duties and responsibilities of the opportunity provided; and

~ Notifying the Extended Learning Coordinator if a student does not report for their scheduled time or if they experience any issues.

Immediate Assistance: Should you encounter any ongoing issues, such as student attendance, or arriving late to their face-to-face or virtual meetings, please do not hesitate to contact Dr. Mark Trexler at (mtrexler@jhu.edu). He is readily available to address any concerns promptly and offer guidance as required.

Visits and On-Site Support: In the rare event that a situation necessitates it, Dr. Mark Trexler is more than willing to visit your extended learning site or participate in a virtual meeting to facilitate discussions and address any concerns that may arise. Please rest assured that our entire ITGL faculty is committed to providing the requisite support to ensure a successful experience for all parties involved. Additionally, he will be scheduling visits just to say "Hi!" to you and our students both in face-to-face or virtual meetings.

Zoom Meetings: Periodically throughout the school year, Dr. Mark Trexler will send out Zoom meeting links. These sessions are entirely optional but are designed to furnish you with a platform for posing questions, exploring alternative perspectives, and receiving assistance. Feel free to join whenever you find it advantageous.
