ITGL students will collaborate with City Springs Elementary/Middle School to support the implementation and evaluation of restorative practices aimed at improving classroom culture, student relationships, and conflict resolution. This project is designed to provide students with hands-on experience in data collection, analysis, and reporting, while contributing to the school's ongoing efforts to create a positive and inclusive learning environment.
Objectives:
Support the Evaluation of Restorative Practices: Gather quantitative and qualitative data on the effectiveness of restorative practices in improving student behavior, relationships, and academic engagement.
Develop Analytical Skills: Use educational research methods to analyze data and draw actionable conclusions for stakeholders.
Foster Real-World Problem Solving: Collaborate with educators to address challenges in implementing restorative practices at the classroom level.
Enhance Cultural Competence: Engage with diverse student populations to understand the nuances of restorative practices in urban school settings.
Activities:
Classroom Observations:
ITGL students will observe classroom sessions where restorative practices are applied (e.g., morning meetings, conflict resolution circles).
Structured observation protocols will be used to record interactions, outcomes, and any observable changes in student behavior or engagement.
Data Collection:
Behavioral Data: Work with school staff to analyze behavioral records pre- and post-implementation of restorative practices.
Data Analysis:
Students will organize and analyze data using statistical tools and qualitative coding methods to identify trends, strengths, and areas for improvement.
Findings will be mapped to the goals of the restorative practices’ initiative.
Reporting and Recommendations:
ITGL students will prepare a comprehensive report, including visual data representations, that outlines the impact of restorative practices on classroom culture and learning outcomes.
Recommendations will be provided to the school for enhancing implementation strategies.
Outcomes:
For ITGL Students:
Practical experience in conducting field research in a school setting.
Development of data analysis and reporting skills applicable to education and policy contexts.
Enhanced understanding of restorative practices as an evidence-based approach to improving school culture.
This project aligns with the ITGL program’s commitment to experiential learning, equipping graduate students with the skills needed to make a tangible impact in education while fostering equitable practices.
