Senior Awards Night
With the end of the year just around the corner, the school has hosted an awards night for its graduating seniors. The event was held at Mims Baptist Church on May 9.
Many seniors were awarded cords for academic courses.
“I knew that I was just getting my AVID cord for being an AVID senior,” senior Paige Nail-Britton said.
Others received their awards and/or cords for CTE programs such as cosmetology and welding.
“I'm excited to finally get awarded for all the hard work that I’ve done,” senior Andie Gifford said. “I’m being awarded for getting my license for cosmetology.”
For each and every award, there is a requirement seniors must complete.
“I did 1,000 hours of cosmetology work,” Gifford said. “And then I took a written test and then an operated test.”
However, others were given awards for receiving a scholarship to any school they were accepted to.
“I didn’t receive cords, but they named the scholarships that I got,” senior Alyssa Harris said. “I got the scholarships for musical theatre, and that’s what I’m majoring in.”
While some knew what awards they were receiving, others were completely surprised when they were invited to attend the ceremony.
“It was really unexpected,” Harris said. “I didn’t think I was going to be invited but I was, so I was kind of psyched for it.”
Despite their accomplishments, students have expressed how they wished they were part of other organizations.
“I wanted to be a part of Softball when I first got here,” Nail Britton said. “But I just kind of talked myself out of it.”
Seniors have worked tirelessly to get to this point in life. From studying to competing, the class of 2023 has put an endless amount of effort into their final year of high school.
“To be in AVID, you have to be a really well-known student and you have to have good grades,” Nail-Britton said. “Keeping that up since the eighth grade is kind of what helped me get there.”
