In the upcoming month of December, the Choir will be performing a concert in dedication to the holidays and one of their seasons. However there’s still a bit to learn about the ever-elusive choir curriculum.
“Choir takes a lot of dedication, I feel like because you have to learn the music and you also have to remember the dynamics that you learn,” sophomore Antionette ‘Annie’ Bansuelo said. “You also have amazing people, so I feel like it’s a strong dedication for everyone in it.”
When asked it turns out their dedication is strong, even without being prompted they practice in their free time.
“Each day, in general, I practice music for choir for 20-30 minutes,” junior Esmeralda Benitez said “Usually around afternoon when I get home.”
The extra practice works in their favor and comes in handy, especially for their busy season schedule.
“So we have a couple different seasons, so in fall we have the fall concert season which is a couple months. Then the winter concert season which is another couple months,” choir teacher Mrs. Emily Kang said “But then in the spring, we come back and we go into April for our contest season. Then after that, just until May, just until the end of school, we do pop shows.”
Even with all the changing seasons, the students still have favorite songs, one major favorite is a classic.
“My favorite song is Carol of the Bells because of the 3-part and how intense it sounds,” sophomore Kymari Stone said “It sounds really good altogether, and I just like how it crescendos and decrescendos.”
Having a favorite song is one thing, but being prepared to sing it in a concert is another.
“So we’re doing really well, getting the music on words, and we’re gonna be super pumped for the concert to have a lot of instruments playing with us.” Mrs. Kang said “So we’ll be singing, but then we’ll also have some songs with harp and some with drums and some with flutes. It’s gonna be really exciting.”
