Trip to Brae Farm: 17 November
On Monday the 17 November the Grade 1 children were able to squeeze in one last day trip. This was in connection with our garden theme and a wonderful way to bring to life, all that we have learnt. Kerry Peckham, a well known teacher, artist and regenerative farmer, was the perfect host. She shared her incredible knowledge as she walked us around her small holding. The children were captivated by her wealth of knowledge as she pointed out the important roles that each creature and organism plays in nature. This is showcased in every part of her beautiful farm. The children collected various items on the way, which were later to form part of their master pieces, produced in the art studio.
There was great excitement as she introduced us to her very treasured animals, who were patiently waiting for us to feed them their breakfast. Bella, one of her many friendly dogs, was with us throughout the day and crept into the children’s hearts when we paused our art, to take her for a refreshing swim in the dam. In typical Clifton style, the children were knee deep in the water in no time, hunting for tadpoles and even finding fresh water shrimps! What a treat it was to learn all about chickens, both layers and broilers, as well as to hold some day-old chickens who were all cuddled under their red light. Meeting Damien the rooster was a highlight and he puffed out his beautiful feathers on cue, when Kerry introduced him during their art lesson. We fed the sheep, spotted the ducks and heard all about Crispy and Bacon, the happiest pigs you will ever meet!
What an incredibly informative morning it was. All too soon it was time to head back to school. We packed the buses with all of our ‘goodies’, which may find their way under the Xmas tree for our very special parents. This is certainly a firm favourite on our calendar and we look forward to many more visits to check in on Kerry and her menagerie at Brae Farm!
